Docetaxel ( doe-se-TAKS-el ) (Taxotere®) What is this medication used for? Docetaxel destroys cancer cells by interfering with their growth cycle. Docetaxel also reduces the expression of the BCL2 gene that is heightened in some cancer cells which causes easier cancer cell death.

What does it look like? • Clear Liquid How is it given?

What are the less common side effects? • Low blood counts • Feeling tired (fatigue, malaise) • Fever, flushing, and low blood pressure • Changes in liver function tests • Change in taste • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy) • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis; for example, difficulty breathing) Special instructions: • Blood tests will be done to monitor blood cell counts and liver function. • Medicines may be given before this medicine is started to help prevent an allergic reaction. • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm.

• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea • Mouth sores • Skin rash that may itch • Irritation of the eyes (for example, conjunctivitis) or vision changes • Weight gain and swelling of the hands and feet (peripheral edema) a few weeks after treatment • Hair loss (alopecia)
