Desmopressin Acetate ( des-moe-PRES-in AS-ih-tate ) (Stimate®, DDAVP® Nocdurna) What is this medication used for?

Desmopressin acetate increases levels of factor VIII and von Willebrand factor in patients with mild hemophilia and Type 1 von Willebrand disease. Desmopressin acetate can also be used to treat diabetes insipidus and works by replacing vasopressin, a hormone that is normally produced in the body to help balance the amount of water and salt.

What does it look like? • Liquid • Tablet How is it given? • In the nose (intranasal)

Special instructions: • The Stimate® and DDAVP® A challenge test may be performed to determine individual patient response before beginning this medication. • If the intranasal form is being used, prime the spray bottle the first time by spraying five times into the air (away from the face) until you see a fine mist. If the medicine isn’t use for more than 7 days, prime it again by spraying once. Throw away the bottle and any unused medication after 50 days. • The amount of fluid taken by mouth may be limited by the healthcare provider. Follow instructions carefully to prevent unwanted side effects. • Notify a healthcare provider if extra fluid is consumed due to hot weather, strenuouse exercise or severe vomiting or diarrhea. • Notify the health care provider of a seizure disorder before beginning this medication • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. • Monitoring blood pressure and frequent blood tests may be necessary.

• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • Under the skin (subcutaneous or subq) • By mouth (oral or PO) What are the common side effects? • Changes in blood pressure • Increased heart rate • Headache • Flushing of face • Nausea • Tiredness • Abdominal cramps • Low sodium levels • Sudden weight gain • Swelling of the legs or ankles What are the less common side effects? • Fluid and electrolyte imbalance • Seizures because of low sodium levels • Blood clots

• Allergic reactions (e.g., itching or hives, swelling in the face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing) • Confusion, weakness, muscle twitching, and weight gain because of fluid or electrolyte imbalances
