Defibrotide ( de-FYE-bro-tide ) (Defitelio) What is this medication used for?
Defibrotide helps prevent and treat sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS; formerly called veno-occlusive disease; i.e., liver dysfunction or severe liver damage) following chemotherapy, particularly high-dose chemotherapy administered before or after stem cell transplants.
What does it look like? • Liquid solution How is it given?
What are the less common side effects? • Decrease in blood pressure • Allergic reaction (e.g., sweating, rash, or increased heart rate) • Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around eyes, face, lips, tongue Special instructions: • This medication may increase the risk for bleeding. Inform the healthcare provider of any bleeding problems or if taking heparin.
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Nausea/vomiting • Increased tendency for bleeding or bruising, especially when given in combination with heparin • Dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position • Unusual tiredness or weakness • Fever • Confusion • Blurred vision • Irritation at the injection site
