Daunorubicin ( dawn-oh-ROO-bih-sin ) (Daunomycin®, Cerubidine®) What is this medication used for? It destroys cancer cells by interfering with their growth cycle.

What does it look like? • Liquid (Red) How is it given?

Special instructions: • Heart tests are done to check heart function before this medicine is given and at certain times throughout the course of treatment. • There is a maximum amount of this medication that may be received during a lifetime. It will be determined by the health care provider. Inform the health care provider if this medication has been received in the past. • Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing outdoors. • This medicine can cause irritation if it leaks out of the vein. Report any burning or pain while the medicine is being given, and call the healthcare providers if the skin becomes red or swollen. Call your healthcare provider if a blister or scab developes, don’t pop it or pick at it. • Frequent laboratory monitoring will be needed, including blood counts and liver function values. • Do not be alarmed if this medication turns urine, tears, sweat, or saliva red for up to 2 days following treatment. • May cause infertility. Discuss options with healthcare provider before beginning this medication. • May serious harm to unborn child. Use effective contraception while receiving this medication. • Do not breastfeed while receiving this medication. • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm.

• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Nausea/vomiting • Urine, sweat, saliva, and tears may turn pink/red for 2 days after treatment • Hair loss (alopecia) • Low blood counts 1–2 weeks after treatment • Mouth sores • Loss of appetite What are the less common side effects? • Heart muscle damage (also may occur after treatment is complete) • Nails may change in color and texture • Skin sensitivity to sunlight in the areas of the body that

have received radiation therapy • Changes to liver function tests • Darkening or redness of the skin • Fever • Allergic reaction
