Acyclovir ( ay-SYE-cloe-veer ) (Zovirax®) What is this medication used for? Acyclovir, an antiviral medication that helps prevent or treat infections such as herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and cytomegalovirus, works by lowering the ability of the herpes virus to multiply in the body. This treats the symptoms of infections.

What does it look like? • Capsule

Special instructions: • It is important to drink fluids when taking this medicine to help prevent kidney damage. When this medicine is given by IV, kidney function will be closely monitored. • If nausea or vomiting occurs, this medicine should be taken with food or milk. • When using the ointment, avoid contact with eyes and genitals.

• Tablet • Liquid • Ointment How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po) • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • Applied to the skin (topical) What are the common side effects? • Feeling tired (fatigue, malaise) • Upset stomach • Pain or irritation at the injection site What are the less common side effects? • Nausea and vomiting • Kidney damage • Rash • Headache • Burning and irritation (when ointment is applied)
