Corticosteroids for Chemotherapy Dexamethasone (Dex-uh-METH-uh-zone) (Decadron®) Prednisone ( PRED-nih-zone ) (Deltasone®) Methylprednisolone ( meth-ill-pred-NIH-soe-lone ) (Solu-Medrol®) What is this medication used for? Dexamethasone, prednisone, and methylprednisolone are similar to hormones made in the body that may work to kill cancer cells and increase the effectiveness of other anticancer medicines.

What does it look like? • Tablet • Oral suspension • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth

What are the less common side effects? • Weak bones or bone fractures • Muscle weakness • Bleeding in the stomach • Cataracts (with long-term use) Special instructions: • Take with food. Milk or antacids may decrease stomach upset. • Appetite will be increased. Eat healthy snacks (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains). Limit salty foods like potato chips and canned foods to minimize fluid retention. • Call your healthcare provider if you notice black bowel movements (a sign of bleeding) or an increase in thirst or urination (a sign of increased blood sugar or sugar in the urine). • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, unless directed by your healthcare provider. This medicine may need to be stopped slowly over a period of several days to weeks.

• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Increased appetite, weight gain, and fluid retention • Swelling • Upset stomach • Acne • Increased blood sugar and sugar in the urine • Irritability and mood changes • Less resistance to infection and longer time for healing • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

• Increased blood pressure • Heartburn (gastric reflux) • Full or round “moon face” (with long-term use)
