Busulfan ( BYUE-sul-fan ) (Myleran®, Busulfex®) What is this medication used for? It is used to destroy cancer cells by interfering with their growth cycle.
• Scarring or stiffening of the lungs • Seizures
What does it look like? • Tablet • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po)
• Cataracts • Dizziness • Blurred vision • Infertility Special instructions: • Lung function will be tested before starting this medicine and at times during treatment. • A medication such as phenytoin may be given to prevent seizures while taking busulfan. • Call your healthcare provider immediately if shaking movement, loss of balance, tremors, or seizures occur. • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm.
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Low blood counts 1 to 3 weeks after treatment • Nausea or vomiting (with high doses) • Mouth sores • Darkening of the skin • Irritation at the injection site • Headache • Increased heart rate What are the less common side effects? • Diarrhea • Abnormal liver function tests • Cough • Shortness of breath • Blood in urine
