Bleomycin ( blee-oh-MY-sin ) (Blenoxane®) What is this medication used for? Bleomycin is used to destroy cancer cells. It interferes with their growth cycle.
What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given? • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • Into the muscle (IM)
What are the less common side effects? • Mild nausea or vomiting • Hair loss (alopecia) • Scarring and stiffening of the lungs • Allergic reaction (for example, chills, fever, or difficulty breathing) Special instructions: • If the medicine is given under the skin, a small dose may be given first to test for an allergic reaction. • Medications may be given prior to bleomycinin order to prevent allergic reactions. • Lung function will be tested before this medicine is started and at certain times during treatment. • Call a healthcare provider if any problems with breathing (like a cough or shortness of breath) or fever and chills occur. • Scuba diving may be prohibited after receiving this medication because of its possible negative impact on the lungs. Discuss scuba diving with the medical team prior to participating in this activity. • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm.
• Into the skin (subcutaneous or subq) What are the common side effects? • Darkening and peeling of the skin, especially the hands (with long-term use) • Dark rings in the nail beds (with long-term use) • Damage to lungs • Fever • Mouth sores • Pain at the injection site • Rash
