Trastuzumab ( tras-TOO-zoo-mab ) (Herceptin®, Hercessi ®, Herzuma ®, Kanjinti®, Ogiviri® Ontruzant®, Trazimera®) What is this medication used for? Trastuzumab is used to treat solid tumors that overexpress the HER2/neu protein on the cells.
What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given?
What are the serious side effects? • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis; may include hives, wheezing, or shortness of breath) • Heart problem or signs or cardiomyopathy (rare) - pounding heartbeats, dizziness, swelling in lower legs, rapid weight gain, and feeling short of breath • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm. Special instructions: • Blood tests will be done regularly to check the blood cell count. • Heart function will be checked before and during treatment with this medicine. Trastuzumab should be used with caution in anyone who has heart disease or is taking chemotherapy that is toxic to the heart. • Trastuzumab can have long lasting effects on your heart, for at least 7 months after your last dose of trastuzumab, tell any other doctor who treats your that your have received this medication. • Notify a healthcare provider if any of these symptoms are experienced: shortness of breath; wheezing; hives; or swelling of the feet, hands, or face. • Consult a healthcare provider before becoming pregnant, fathering a child, or breastfeeding. It may be important to use birth control while taking this medicine.
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Fever or chills • Nausea or vomiting • Headache • Rash • Mouth sores • Trouble sleeping, feeling tired • Overall body pain, especially joint or back pain • Stomach (abdominal) pain • Weakness • Diarrhea (loose stools) What are the less common side effects? • Flu-like symptoms (cough, stuffy nose, sinus pain, or sore throat) • Infection • Prickling sensation or feeling of “pins and needles” (paresthesia) • Loss of appetite (anorexia) • Trouble sleeping (insomnia) • Cough or nasal congestion • Shortness of breath (dyspnea) • Rapid weight gain or swelling, usually of the feet, ankles, or hands (peripheral edema) • Dizziness
