Atovaquone ( a-TOE-va-kwone ) (Mepron®) What is this medication used for? Atovaquone is a medicineused to prevent or treat Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PJP) in patients with weakened immune systems (patients who are immunocompromised).
What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects? • Headache • Fever • Infection • Rash • Nausea and/or vomiting • Stomach (abdominal) upset/pain • Diarrhea • Cough • Weakness • Change in taste What are the less common side effects? • Loss of appetite • Anxiety • Constipation • Dizziness • Low or high blood sugar levels • Depression • Sweating • Severe weakness • Shortness of breath • Runny nose • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) • Muscle pain (myalgia) • Changes to liver function tests
Special instructions: • This medication should be taken with food. • Shake this medication well before use.
• Call a healthcare provider if signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; or chest tightness. • Call a healthcare provider if there are signs of liver problems, such as dark (cola-colored) urine, light-colored stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or feeling very tired. • Call your healthcare provider if blistering or peeling of the skin occurs. • Liver function will be tested before and while receiving treatment.
