Rasburicase ( ras-BYOOR-ih-kayse ) (Elitek®) What is this medication used for? Rasburicase is used to lower high uric acid levels in the blood.
What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given?
Special instructions: • Large amount of IV fluids will be administered with this medicine to help remove uric acid from the body. • Fluid intake and urine output will be closely monitored before, during, and after the medication is given. • Blood tests will be done to monitor uric acid levels. • Notify your healthcare provider if you have a known diagnosis of G6PD deficiency. • Notify your healthcare provider if any of these symptoms occur: paleness, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), dark urine, fatigue, shortness of breath, or a rapid heart rate. These can all be symptoms of hemolytic anemia, which is most commonly seen in patients with a
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Fever • Headache • Nausea and vomiting • Diarrhea • Constipation • Anxiety What are the less common side effects? • Rashes • Back pain • Changes in blood pressure • Pain at the injection site • Low blood counts (red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets, or neutrophils) • Stomach (abdominal) pain • Allergic reactions or difficulty breathing • Changes in electrolyte levels • Changes in liver function numbers • Fever • Chest pain • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
