Proton Pump Inhibitors: Lansoprazole ( lan-SOE-prah-zole ) (Prevacid®) Omeprazole ( oh-MEH-prah-zole ) (Prilosec®) Esomeprazole e h-SOE-meh-prah-zole ) (Nexium®) Pantoprazole pan·tow·pruh·zowl (Protonix®) What is this medication used for?

Proton pump inhibitors prevent damage to the gastrointestinal tract caused by stomach acid or infection by decreasing the production of stomach acid. These medications are long acting and may not provide immediate relief of symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux.

What does it look like? • Capsule • Granules • Tablet • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po)

Special instructions: • Take this medicine 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. • Swallow the capsule whole or sprinkle contents of capsule on soft food or liquid. Mix granules with 2 tablespoons of water and drink. Place the orally disintegrating tablet on the tongue, and let it dissolve. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablet • Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you have hypertension, chest pain, or a conduction disorder of the heart occurs. • Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop any of the following: severe dizziness or passing out, significant change in thinking clearly and logically, extreme tiredness or weakness, severe diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, rash, or any sign of allergic reaction including wheezing, chest tightness, and swelling of the face.
