Ondansetron ( on-DAN-seh-tron ) (Zofran®) What is this medication used for? Ondansetro is used to help prevent nausea and vomiting. It works by blocking serotonin, one of the body’s natural substances that causes vomiting.
What does it look like? • Tablet • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po)
Special instructions: • The first dose should be taken 30 minutes before chemotherapy or radiation therapy is started. • People with certain heart conditions should review with their health care provider prior to taking • Call your healthcare provider if vomiting occurs and fluids cannot be taken by mouth.
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Constipation • Diarrhea • Headache • Fever • Dizziness • Dry mouth • Skin rash What are the less common side effects? • Shortness of breath
• Changes to heart, seen on an electrocardiogram (EKG), which can be caused by taking additional medications with similar side effects
