Mycophenolate ( mye-coe-FEN-oh-late ) (MMF, CellCept®) What is this medication used for? It is an immunosuppressant agent that helps prevent or treat graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
What does it look like? • Capsule • Tablet • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po)
Special instructions: • Take oral dose on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. • Take this medication at the same time every day. • Do not take within 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids. If you are taking antacids, take them 2 hours after mycophenolate. • Capsules should be swallowed whole, not opened, crushed, or mixed with other medications. • Do not let capsule contents touch skin or mucous membranes; wear gloves when handling this medication. • Shake liquid well before use. Measure carefully, and do not mix with other liquid drugs. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator. • Call a healthcare provider if this medicine cannot be taken due to vomiting or if any of the following occur: diarrhea, a fever, or bruising, or bleeding. • Inform your healthcare provider about other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Many drugs interact with mycophenolate. Ask your healthcare provider for a complete list of medications that may interact with this drug. Your healthcare provider may need to change your medication or monitor you carefully for side effects.
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Low blood counts • Swelling or puffiness (edema) • Bruising • Constipation or diarrhea • Nausea and vomiting • Stomach (abdominal) pain • Decreased appetite • Increased risk of infection • Headache or dizziness • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) • Weakness • Back or joint pain (arthralgia) • High or low blood pressure (hypertension or hypotension) What are the less common side effects? • Abnormal levels of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium in the blood • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) • Digestive system (gastrointestinal) bleeding • Tremors • Vision changes • Rash • Muscle cramps
