Mitoxantrone ( my-toe-ZAN-trone ) (Novantrone®) What is this medication used for? Mitoxantrone is used to treat some types of leukemia.
• Heart tests are done before this medicine is given and at certain times throughout the course of treatment. • This medicine can cause irritation if it leaks out of the vein. Report any burning or pain while the medicine is administered. If the skin becomes red or swollen, call your healthcare provider.
What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given?
• Into the vein (IV) or venous access device What are the common side effects? • Low blood counts • Hair loss (alopecia) • Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite • Diarrhea • Abnormal or absent menstrual periods • Headache • Mouth sores
What are the less common side effects? • Irregular or increased heart rate during infusion • Blue-green discoloration of urine, skin, eyes, and saliva (for about 24 hours after receiving this drug) • Liver damage • Heart muscle damage • Bruising, bleeding, or darkening of skin or nails Special instructions:
