Mesna ( MEZ-nah ) (Mesnex®) What is this medication used for? Mesna helps prevent bladder irritation or bleeding caused by chemotherapy drugs like cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide. It works by altering the breakdown of products of the chemotherapy found in the urine, making them less toxic.
What does it look like? • Liquid • Tablet How is it given? • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects? • Unpleasant taste when taken by mouth
What are the less common side effects? • Mild nausea • Diarrhea or stomach (abdominal) pain • Limb and joint pain (arthralgia) • Headache
• Flushing in the face • Low blood pressure • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) Special instructions: • If taking the liquid by mouth, it can be diluted with carbonated soda, juice, or milk to decrease the odor and taste.
