Antithymocyte Globulin ( an-tee-THY-moe-site GLOB-yoo-lin ) (Atgam®, Thymoglobulin®) What is this medication used for?
Antithymocyte globulin (ATG), an infusion of horse-derived (Atgam®) or rabbit- derived (Thymoglobulin®) antibodies against human T cells, works by killing the T lymphocytes (killer cells that work to defend our immune systems). It helps prevent and treat acute rejection of transplanted organs and bone marrow. It is used to treat patients with aplastic anemia who cannot receive a bone marrow transplant.
What does it look like? • Liquid solution How is it given? • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device
What are the less common side effects? • Headache
• Serum sickness: flu-like symptoms that start about a week after the first dose and last for several weeks. Rashes, joint pain, muscle aches, and a tired feeling (fatigue, malaise) may be present. • Allergic reactions Special instructions: • Antihistamines, antipyretics, and steroids may be given to help reduce some of the common side effects. • Vital signs will be monitored frequently while and after the medication is given. • Liver and kidney function will be monitored during and after treatment. • It is not recommended that antithymocyte globulin be taken during pregnancy.
• A small test dose of antithymocyte globulin may be given under the skin (subcutaneous) or into the vein before the first infusion to check for an allergic reaction. What are the common side effects? • During the infusion • Fever, chills, or shivering • Hives or rash • Low white blood cell and platelet counts (neutropenia, thrombocytopenia) • Increased risk of infection • Difficulty breathing • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea • Joint, chest, or back pain • Abnormal kidney function tests
