Irinotecan ( eye-rin-oh-TEE-can ) (Camptosar®) What is this medication used for? Irinotecan destroys cancer cells by interfering with their growth cycle. What does it look like? • Liquid How is it given? • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects? • Severe diarrhea, which may cause dehydration and changes in levels of electrolytes (sodium and potassium) • Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia) • Sweating • Fever • Increased production of saliva • Nausea and vomiting • Loss of appetite (anorexia) • Stomach (abdominal) pain and cramping • Hair loss (alopecia) • Mouth sores (mucositis)

What are the less common side effects? • Feeling tired (fatigue, malaise) • Changes in liver and kidney function tests • Constipation • Pain at injection site • Rash • Itching (pruritis) • Redness and warmth in the face Special instructions:

• Diarrhea may occur even after stopping this medicine. • It is important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions to take loperamide (Imodium®) at onset of diarrhea. • Call your healthcare provider if diarrhea persists or there are signs of dehydration such as decreased urine output, no tears when crying, dry mouth, or cracked lips.
