Hydroxyzine ( hye-DROKS-i-zeen ) (Vistaril®, Atarax®) What is this medication used for? This is a medication used to treat itching, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety.
What does it look like? • Liquid • Tablet • Capsule How is it given? • By mouth (oral or PO) • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • Into the muscle (IM) What are the common side effects? • Feeling sleepy • Dry mouth
What are the less common side effects? • Allergic reaction, which may include rash; itching (pruritis); red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; or fever • Fast or abnormal heart rate • Dizziness • Feeling confused • Trouble controlling body movements Special instructions: • Store this medicine at room temperature and protect it from light. • Until you experience the effects of this medication, avoid activities that require alertness, focus, and coordination. • If the symptoms do not improve or become worse, call your healthcare provider. • Notify your healthcare provider if the patient who will take hydroxyzine has ever had a heart disorder called long QT, which would have been detected on an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG).
