Hydrocortisone ( hye-dro-COR-tih-zone ) (A-Hydrocort, Cortef®, Solu-Cortef®) How does this medicine work?
Hydrocortisone is a natural steroid produced by the adrenal gland. The medicine is used to treat many health problems: allergies, asthma, adrenal gland problems, blood disorders, skin rashes, and inflammation. One way hydrocortisone works in cancer treatment is by decreasing inflammation (swelling).
What does it look like? • Clear liquid • White tablet • Clear ointment How is it given? • Intravenous (IV) or venous access device • Injection into a muscle • By mouth • Topical What are the common side effects? • Mood changes
What are the less common side effects? • Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash, itching, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin with or without fever • High blood sugars • Signs of infection like fever, chills, severe sore throat, ear or sinus pain, or cough • Feeling confused • Shortness of breath • Skin changes (e.g., pimples, stretch marks, slow healing, or hair growth) • Depression Special instructions: • Keep this medicine at room temperature and protect it from light. • Call your healthcare provider if your child is exposed to a serious infection • Your healthcare provider may put your child on a medication for heartburn, such as an antacid • If the symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, call your healthcare provider. • Minimize salty foods (e.g., potato chips and canned foods). This will help to minimize fluid retention. • Take tablet with meals. Milk or antacids may help to decrease upset stomach.
