Glutamine ( GLOO-tuh-meen ) (Enterex®; Endari ®) What is this medication used for?
Glutamine is used to help prevent mucositis (mouth sores) or promote healing following chemotherapy. The most abundant free amino acid in the body, glutamine is produced in the muscles and distributed by the blood to the organs that need it.
What does it look like? • Powder • Liquid How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects?
What are the less common side effects? • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which may include itching (pruritis), hives, swelling of the face or hands, tingling in the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness • Signs of pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis), such as severe stomach pain or back pain, a very upset stomach, or vomiting. • Fever, chills, or body aches • Swelling or pain in the arms and legs Special instructions: • Notify a healthcare provider if the patient has an allergy to any amino acid or monosodium glutamate (MSG).
• Dizziness • Headache • Dry mouth • Nausea or vomiting • Excess gas (flatulence) • Constipation • Stomach (abdominal) pain • Back pain
