Ganciclovir ( gan-SYE-cloe-veer ) (Cytovene®) What is this medication used for? Ganciclovir is an antiviral that prevents or treats infections from a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV).
What does it look like? • Liquid • Capsule How is it given? • Into the vein (IV) or venous access device • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects? • Low white blood cell and platelet counts (neutropenia and thrombocytopenia) • Headache • Feeling tired (fatigue, malaise) • Nausea and vomiting • Leg cramps or muscle spasms • Decreased appetite • Change in taste • Dry mouth • Dry skin • Hair loss (alopecia)
What are the less common side effects? • Low red blood cell count (low hemoglobin, anemia) • Changes to liver and kidney function tests • Confusion • Increased risk of infection • Fever • Rash • Diarrhea • Problems with vision • Ringing in ears (tinnitus) Special instructions: • Call your healthcare provider if a fever, bruising, or bleeding occur while taking this medicine. • Take the oral medicine with fluid to increase absorption. • In utero exposure may cause fetal harm.
