Gabapentin ( ga-buh-PEN-tin ) (Neurontin®) What is this medication used for?
Gabapentin is used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain) and chronic pain. It also is used to prevent seizures and may be used to treat migraine headaches. Gabapentin works by altering electrical activity in the brain and influencing the activity of chemicals called neurotransmitters, which send messages between nerve cells.
What does it look like? • Liquid • Tablet • Capsule How is it given? • By mouth (oral or po) What are the common side effects? • Swelling of arms, legs, hands, or feet (peripheral edema) • Muscle aches • Flu-like symptoms • Dizziness or loss of balance • Hyperactivity or hostile behavior • Sudden changes in mood (mood swings) • Tiredness or sleepiness • Eye twitching • Dry mouth What are the less common side effects? • Allergic reaction, which may include itching (pruritis), hives, swelling of face or hands, tingling in mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness • Unusual bleeding or bruising
Special instructions: • Because this medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, the first dose on the first day should be administered at bedtime and patients taking this medicine should not drive or operate heavy machinery. • This medicine should not be stopped without consulting a healthcare provider. • Blood tests will be done to check kidney function. • The liquid suspension should be stored in the refrigerator. • The tablet should be stored at room temperature. • If capsules can’t be swallowed, the capsule can be opened and the contents can be mixed with food, juice, or flavored syrups that are taken immediately.
