Foscarnet ( foss-CAR-net ) (Foscavir®) What is this medication used for? Foscarnet is an antiviral medicine that ] helps prevent or treat infections from viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and drug resistant herpes simplex virus (HSV).

• Changes to liver function tests • Seizures • Allergic reaction • Dizziness • Increased blood pressure • Weight loss • Ulcers on mouth or perineal area (near anus) Special instructions: • Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine to prevent kidney damage. • Notify your healthcare provider if chest pain, headache, dizziness, problems breathing, numbness, tingling, bruising, or bleeding occur. • Frequent monitoring of laboratory values will be necessary. This testing may include monitoring the white blood cell counts, the salts in the blood such as potassium and calcium and tests to detect levels of CMV in the body • Additional IV hydration may be necessary before and after administration of this medication. Frequent eye exams are needed when receiving this medication.

• Headache • Chest pain • Kidney damage • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea • Low levels of magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and potassium in the blood • Increased urination or thirst • Decreased appetite • Sweating What are the less common side effects? • Tremors • Pancreatitis • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy)
